Buying Organic

A couple months ago we started to get our fruits and veggies delivered from local
farmers. I get so excited the day of delivery. I wanted to see if there was a difference
in buying local and organic let me tell you it just tastes fresher and better. We
consume lots of fruits and veggies for juicing, salads and every week night meal.
Do you buy organic and is it important to you? Is it worth paying more ? CSA

  1. I buy local, organic produce from the farmers markets when I can make it there on the weekends. Otherwise, I will try to find the most local and usually organic produce at the food store...but sometimes the prices are just killer! I agree- it does taste better

  2. Our grocery store has a pretty great organic section, but some veggies they stock are only available in the non-organic section. I do try to hit up our great farmers market as often as possible so I can buy from local farmers who grow organically. I agree, it's just a great way to purchase and consume fruits & veggies.

  3. We had a produce box delivery for a long time and I loved it. We only stopped when planning our veggie garden. I buy organic and local as much as possible. Especially when it comes to berries, oh and meats that could have hormones or antibiotics in them. I just read that some chicken has recently been found to have arsenic in it (via their non organic feed). I don't really want to feed my kids even "a little" arsenic.

  6. I'd like to do one of these co-ops... you just reminded me that I forgot to research that this season! :/ oh well. I buy organic sometimes- I know the top 10 that you SHOULD buy organic... it just depends. We have a great little market that I go to when I do, or when we're at the Saturday market. I'm actually more inclined to buy free range organic meats than veggies! :)

  7. i believe thast it is worth paying more... for certain things. i try to buy what i can from the local farmers market. although i currently live in a small town and they are WAY behind on the organic trends... when we move i am hoping to have a lot more options!

  8. I would like to, want to, need to...but no. Not yet! I hear it is the way to go though....your fruits and veggies look so colorful and fresh.

    Love, Meli

  9. This all looks SO good! I definitely agree that organic is better. We have a couple farmer's markets in town and I NEED to take more advantage of buying produce there. :)

  12. I buy local, and if I can I drive all the way out to get them from one specific farmer! :) Sometimes it is worth paying more, sometimes not. It always depends. :(

  13. I believe in buying local as well! I used to get my veggie box delivered every week but unfortunately the quality wasnt so good :( I had to cancel because everything I got was pretty limp and bruised! it was so disappointing because I love the idea and the variety! yours looks amazing tho!

  14. we eat SO many fruits and veggies each week, but i haven't been able to justify the extra $$ on organic yet. maybe one day :)

  15. Definitely worth the extra cost! I don't have any experience with a CSA but one day, either we'll have a yard big enough to grow our own or we'll be able to afford a CSA. In the meantime, I make sure to buy organic!

  16. We try to buy organic as often as possible and we are trying desperately to keep our garden alive without spraying any chemicals. I'll let you know how it goes. I love going to the little stands around the area and supporting the local farmers. Makes me want to create my own little stand in front of the house!

  17. It is definitely worth paying more to be without pesticides! When I buy pourous fruits and veggies like strawberries, blueberries, spinach etc - I buy organic. Things like bananas, avacodos - things with thick skins, I don't. I try to save money where I can!

  19. I GROW organic in my veggie garden and I shop at a store that only carries organic items..yes it is worth more to me.

  20. I agree with everyone that organic tastes better. I am probably 50/50......it's just so expensive to feed a family of 5. I'd like to start a small garden for salad fixings.....and I'd love to read more about what is important to buy organic. Thanks for posting about this topic - I need to learn more.

  21. These look delish! I recently wrote a post about dirty veggies. This helped me decide what was important to buy organic and what wasn't needed. It can be quite expensive so it was nice to know what I didnt have to splurge on.

  22. I try to buy local and organic when I can. I have been wanting to join a CSA here to get the baskets delivered too! All your produce looks amazing! Been loving your blog btw:)

  23. What beautiful produce! I have always and continue to long to live in California. We do try to buy organic wherever possible and I love to buy local. I love it when I can buy local and organic. That's the best of both worlds! There is a definitely difference in quality.

  24. OH those look delicious! We have a local farmer's market, but no real stores that carry many organic produce. I definitely think there is a difference. We have been using frozen lately because the produce in our local grocery store has not been very fresh looking lately and we have been so busy that we've been unable to make it to the local farmer's market. Then my hubby brought home some fresh broccoli and steamed it, and I kept asking what he did different because the taste was so much better! In fact, the broccoli was the only thing the kids would eat off their plates that night and each ended up eating three helpings each of it! Needless to say, I don't think we will be buying frozen again! You are very lucky to have access to an organic delivery service!

  25. I keep hearing how much better organic is but I've yet to try it. Aside from it being more expensive, Whole Foods & Fresh Market aren't conveniently located & I hate going out of my to grocery shop.

  26. I buy organic for some things, but not for everything. I agree it does taste fresher and better, but sometimes the grocery budget can only stretch so far. I wish I had a CSA available here.

  27. I buy organic where I can. We shop at a local produce market that sells fruits and veggies from local farmers in the state of Florida. It's not organic, but it is grown in our area and seasonal...it tastes fresher, and doesn't smell like pesticide.

  28. I'm very interested that you can taste a difference in the fruits and veggies! I want to try to get into a CSA around here.

  29. Do you know what I love? Growing things in our garden! We grow lots of fruit and letting the children pick their own makes me feel sooooooooooooo happy!!

  30. I try to buy organic as often as possible - especially those fruits and vegetables that I've read are most important to buy organic. If there would have been organic milk available when my girls were little I would have bought that also.

Your farm fresh delivery looks wonderful!

  31. Luckily we live across the street from a farmers market so all our produce is fresh and organic, it wasn't important to me until we moved where we live and started shopping at the market. I can now totally taste the difference, and actually for us, shopping there is cheaper than shopping at the grocery store!

  32. All your fruits and veggies look delicious, Val. I try to buy as much organic as I can...I usually just buy things at Costco or the grocery store. I want to know that I've done everything I can to keep my kids healthy and the planet too :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Those veggies look amazing! If I am going to eat the skin of the veggie or fruit, then I buy organic. Organic strawberries are really amazing to me. Let me know what masterpiece(s) you come up with!

  34. I love nothing more than TONS of fresh, organic produce!!! MMMMMM

  35. Hi , I just found your blog and absolutely love it! I too buy organic most of the time, about 6 years now. Anyway, I will be following too! :) Thanks, Anna

  36. I always try and buy organic too. It may be a little more expensive but I swear it's worth it!

  37. I wish we lived somewhere with a better selection of organic. We have one farmers market and the produce is iffy at best :(

  38. We keep meaning to join a CSA every year, but when the time comes, we never have the money all at once. I suppose this means we should, I don't know, try to save up for it?
We do go to the farmers market weekly when it's open, and it's amazing how much you can get for $20. I love it.

  39. My husband and I are on a strict budget, but, buying organic is one thing we don't scrimp on. It is super important to nurture our bodies (and the people we love) with the best food possible.

  40. nothing better than fresh and organic! and wahoo for the local farmer's markets:)

  41. I do buy organic as much as possible and there is a huge difference to me. It just has more texture, more flavor, a freshness you can't get in the store!

    ReplyDelete
  42. i really wish i did buy more organic produce, however, the selection in ohio is slim-pickins. but i absolutely agree with you regarding taste and even the way you feel after you consume it!

  43. Hi Val in So cal!
    I'm Genn in So Cal!
    Cute blog name ;)
Yes we buy organic and local and what a difference it makes!! I am so passionate about it and I want to tell everyone to do the same!! We have two farmers markets in town that we go to and everything is so bright and fresh. Love it.

    Great blog.
    Nice to mee ya.

  44. I love buying locally, tastes so much better. I have wanted to try a CSA for a while now but I'm just nervous that we would waste a lot of food with it just being my husband and I. Looks delicious!!

  45. This is the BEST time of the year to buy locally, right? So, that's what we do. Actually, we just came back from a farm 10 minutes from us. It's amazing!

Organic? I wish I could afford everything organic, but we don't have an organic store here, so we buy whatever we can find it where we shop, but I wish it was cheaper. Certain items still really expensive. So, we go locally... :-)

    Have a great day!

  46. I have seriously thought about getting my produce from a CSA but I am worried that too much of it would go to waste. Any ideas how to prevent that?

  47. It's so nice to know that we all think alike!! Buying organic makes me feel so much better about giving my kiddos fruits and veggies without chemicals. Ramona, the great thing about the CSA is that in the box they give you recipe cards and I like that it will sometime's give me things I would not naturally buy in the store and knowing that you spent the money will make you use it all up! =))

  48. Because there are so many regulations now for certified organic farmers, most will hang their shingle to say they use organic practices, but not certified. There is a $5,000 fine if you say you are "certified" and you are not. Buying from those who are "local" or CSA's who use organic practices is extremely worthwhile. Know your farmer > its food with a place, a name, and a place. When those big trucks rolling across the USA can't get the produce to you because of a disaster, you should know your local folks; they will be the ones who feed you.
To Ramona, our CSA will bring to feed however much a family of 2 would need.

  50. Really there isn't anything more beautiful than a pic of fresh veggies!! So colorful and fresh! I seem to go through spurts of organic and not. I certainly prefer it... I think you can definitely tell a difference. I desperately want my own garden, but it will have to wait.
    Hugs girly!

  53. Hey Val-
It all looks so yummy! I used to only buy organic...then I had three boys that would eat $30 of fruit in one day and I was going broke .
We are fortunate to have many fruit trees in our neighborhood that we can pick from but lately I have just been buying what Is on special. Also, the 99cent store has been selling organic which saves me a bundle :)
    Have a fabulous weekend!

  54. I could not agree more. Buying organic is so worth it. Sooo much better tasting and obviously better for you! : )

  55. Gosh Val! Can I come to your house every week night for dinner?!?! YUM! I only recently have made more of an effort to buy organic and although I can't always tell a taste difference, I do feel better knowing I'm not ingesting all those unneeded additives. The one thing I don't like about organic is the cost. Not necessarily for us, but I hate that America struggles with obesity and yet the foods we make affordable to those populations that struggle with it are over-processed, sugar laden empty calories. I just wish is was affordable for EVERYONE so then at least those who did want to make a better choice, could.
I'll step down off my soapbox now :)

  56. YES YES and YES!!!! I definitely buy organic (as much as I can) and I can tell a HUUUUUGE difference. Food without the pesticides, hormones, etc etc tastes SO much better. My dream is to have a garden where I can grow my own veggies...ahhhh heaven!! one day....

    ReplyDelete
  57. Absolutely. Some people think I'm nuts for spending so much money on food, but I prefer quality over a something that's just a good price.

  58. I've been kind of limited on my diet since I'm temporarily living on base and work weird hours. My diet has been horrible lately. Juicing is such a great idea, I had forgotten about that as an option. I would love to see a few of your favorite juicing recipes If you are looking for a posting idea.

    Have a great weekend Val!
