American Chop Suey

When I was growing up my mom would make this maybe once every two weeks.
It was my fathers favorite meal. Pure comfort food and a meal that brings back
fond memories. I hope when my children grow up they will look back on the
dinners I make and have great memories of their childhood.

American Chop Suey is a Pasta Dish that is most prevalent in New England.

                                                               American Chop Suey

                                                              1 box elbow macaroni
1 1/2 pounds ground beef or turkey
                                                              1 green bell pepper, diced
                                                              1 large onion, chopped
                                                              4 garlic cloves, minced
                                                              2 ( 15 ounce ) cans tomato sauce
                                                              2 ( 15 ounce ) cans diced tomatoes
                                                              2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
                                                              1 teaspoon garlic powder
                                                              1/2 teaspoon onion powder
                                                              1 teaspoon italian seasoning
                                                              1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
                                                              salt and pepper

     1) Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook pasta and drain.

     2) Meanwhile, while the pasta is boiling. Place onion, pepper and garlic in the pan and
cook 5 minutes. Add beef and cook until beef is browned and onions are soft. Add all
of the spices, mix well and add worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce and diced tomatoes.
Cook for 20 to 30 minutes. Add noodles to pasta.

Serve with sour cream, fresh herbs and a loaf of crusty garlic bread.

  20. They used to make this at least once a week or once every other week in high school (our cafeteria was run by the culinary department, I went to a trade high school, so our food was a little better than standard crappy school food anyway) and it was one of my favorite things. So happy to have found this!

  21. We used to eat this a lot growing up too, but we called it Goulash. I live in the Midwest, so it must be just a regional thing for the different names :) Your recipe looks yummy though! I haven't had this in years so I'll have to try it.
